The new revelation comes in a small section of the document, outlining the boilerplate people who are automatically excluded from the settlement, such as the judge and his family. The new disclosure to the San Francisco court is part of a new 36-page proposed settlement, asking the court to approve a deal between the company and the millions of affected users. Roblox agreed to the settlement terms without admitting wrongdoing. The company disputed this in a statement saying, "Since 2021, Roblox has had an automated process for crediting Robux to users who, as a result of moderation, lost access to a previously purchased avatar item through no fault of their own.” The filing alleges that when Roblox decides to unilaterally remove an in-game item entirely, the purchaser is left with nothing, and receives no refund or other compensation. Every time a good changes hands, Roblox itself takes a 30 percent cut of the deal. The case alleges that Roblox acts irresponsibly when the corporation arbitrarily deletes such items – various accessories, hats, or other items of virtual clothing – after they have been sold from one player to another because the company suddenly decides the item violates the company’s own policies. The settlement is for a 2021 suit that was brought by Chicago law firm Edelson PC on behalf of an anonymous under-18 year-old girl who bought in-game items from another Roblox player. ![]() Roblox failed to meet our recommendations for privacy and security practices and until they have the necessary guardrails in place, it will not be a safe platform for kids." The platform continues to be overcommercialized and inundated with bad actors. “Having that many fingers on the scale leaves them open for corruption or manipulation of the currency, and there’s no regulation aside from Roblox itself. “That’s because the platform sets the terms for its own currency, Robux, like the exchange rates for real cash and the pay rates inside their online stores,” he wrote in an email. Jeff Haynes, the senior editor of games for Common Sense Media, a non-profit that recommends various forms of digital media for parents, said that such allegations of money laundering in Roblox doesn’t surprise him. In its previous filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Roblox has said that it had “structured” the company with “applicable laws relating to money laundering and money transmission services” in mind. ![]() Other games with similar virtual economies have had comparable scams, like Fortnite. Additionally, there is some evidence to suggest that users – the majority of whom are children – are able to scam each other out of items that have in-game value and can then be sold. Roblox has an in-game economy that officially only allows users to sell their Robux back to the company when they reach 30,000 (or $375), so there is an entire secondary market for buying and selling Robux. “These exclusions were necessary because they represent a very specific use case and don't meet the criteria for inclusion in the class settlement.” “We have robust controls in place to protect against money laundering, which is not at issue in this lawsuit,” he wrote. Roblox spokesperson William Nevius said in a statement that the company disagrees with the characterization of money laundering, and noted it will be filing a brief in response in the coming weeks.
